The Supermarket Recovery Program (SRP) is the first of its kind in Canada. In collaboration with food retailers, the SRP offers a unique and sustainable solution to the problems of food waste and food insecurity.

Its operating model, which respects both the requirements of the retailers and provides consumer protection, was developed by Moisson Montréal through a pilot project that was tested for two years. The Food Banks of Quebec network has since coordinated the deployment of the SRP with the other Moisson establishments across Québec.

The SRP is at once a social, environmental, and economic project. It improves access to various healthy foods for food-aid beneficiaries while saving edible food from landfills. It is a win-win solution for supermarkets and food banks.

Key figures for the SRP in 2022-2023 :

14 participating supermarkets
107,822 kg of food recovered, 29% of which was meat
$1,282,004 in market value
